There are following points to be remembered while attempting English Section of MCQ Test papers.
· May is used for Possibility, Permission, Politeness, operative/blessing sentences.
· Might is used for less possibility, permission with hesitation and past of May.
For example:
He said that he may/might do the work. IBPS-2012
Explanation:
In the above example He said shows that the sentence is in past. So in this case might is used. Whenever you find that the sentence is given in past then use the past form of can, may, will and shall which are could, might, would and should only.
· Can is used for Ability, permission, politeness.
· Could is used for Ability, permission-informal (preferred in friend circle), remote possibility and ability of past.
· Shall is used for threat, command, compulsion, promise and determination (TCCPD) in the sentences.
For example:
You shall/should/may enter into the classroom without my permission.
Explanation:
Command is given in above example. So shall is used as option in answer.
· In case of interrogative sentences, shall is used with I/we and will is used with he/she/it/they/you.
· Would is used to show habit of past (especially to narrate long stories) and for permission-formal and past of will.
· Must is used for need/urgency/compulsion in sentences.
· Ought to is use for moral duty. For example: You ought to serve your parents.
· Need/dare is used as main verb if the sentence is positive and used as model when the sentence is negative or interrogative. Need may be replaced by dare.
For example: Choose the correct verb in following sentences.
a) He needs to do home-work.
(Positive sentence: Need is used as main verb).
b) He need not do home-work.
(Negative sentence: Need acts as model verb).
c) Need she talk to you?
(Interrogative sentence: Need is act as model verb).
Note: Don’t use s or es with models.
